Final Reflection

The Parade on Wednesday was a very nice conclusion to my senior project. It was amazing to see everyone's final costumes, while also being able to participate in it myself. My project didn't exactly fit into the standard senior project guidelines since it was a special offer from Sklad and Ms. Buckley, but I think a lot of the questions I have to answer can still be applied to my project. Coming into the intensive, I didn't really know what to expect. I was mainly just there to help out with whatever needed help. Partly, I was hoping to do a lot of painting, or anything related to art because I've missed taking an art class for the past year. I was also hoping to maybe make a costume and participate in the parade, but that didn't end up happening. I did do a lot of painting which was very fun. It was especially helpful because I had to improvise a lot of colors and details when it wasn't quite clear what we had to do due to the poor labeling on the mural. This allowed me to improve some of my shading and color-picking skills. It's harder than you'd think to know which colors will look good with each other.

I did make some mistakes during the process, but many of these were easily fixable. For example, some of the colors we made didn't look very good at first, so we would just remake the color and go back over it. The problem with this though is that it is a time-consuming process, and I didn't always have enough time to fix these mistakes. One of the jellyfish in the murals doesn't look too great because the colors I made while trying to fix the initial painting blended together too much. It's hard to see the details in the painting. This wasn't anything detrimental luckily, because it still looked ok and people weren't totally focused on all of the murals. But this taught me to be more careful when choosing colors for paintings and to make sure that they contrast enough.

I had a lot of fun teaching some of the underclassmen different techniques or giving them advice when they asked for it. I also had fun spending time with the other seniors in the intensive. It was nice to not be completely on my own during this project, unlike many of our other classmates. I'm very grateful to Sklad and Ms. Buckley for allowing us to help them with this intensive, and I hope that we helped make their last intensive one of the more enjoyable ones in their Hawken career.
