Most of Thursday and Friday were spent working on another mural. While the students in the class are good at painting the base of the mural and creating the initial pencil sketch, Gaby and I are helpful because we can add the more complicated details that take more time and patience. Most of the students want to move on from the murals because they have costumes to make, while Gaby and I don't. We are making a float/costume on the side, but it isn't our first priority. This is the mural we are currently working on:
This mural is much more complicated than the previous mural of the elephant. The details are more intricate because of the scales and the fairy wings. The student in charge of it asked us to help her after she had painted the background blue. We started by making a base for the pink because it was the most abundant color. Then we just made different shades of that for the highlights and shading. After we had our colors we printed out a colored version of the original picture to help us add the details that didn't come through the initial sketch. Because the murals were traced from projections on the wall, all the small details don't always translate through to the final sketch. So far this has been a tricky process, and we have had to improvise a lot. For example, we decided to replace all of the white spots with light pink because it would have been too stark of a contrast to have pure white. We also have to freehand lots of scales because of the issue with projector translation. I'm excited to see how this mural will turn out though since it looks good so far.
When we aren't working on the mural, Gaby and I work on our squid which will hopefully appear in the parade if we can get it done. We are trying to take advantage of previous costumes. For example, we are using a giant paper machete ball that was used in one of Sklad's Halloween costumes for the head. Our next step is to start painting that and then add tentacles, and hopefully, either it or the murals will be done by the end of the week.
